The Coalition was formed to address shared challenges affecting gender equality and media sustainability, including fragmented efforts, limited resources, and the need for stronger collective advocacy. It provides a platform for organisations to collaborate, amplify impact, strengthen sustainability, and drive meaningful change across Africa’s media landscape.
The Coalition for Gender and Media Sustainability in Africa is a collaborative platform bringing together organisations and stakeholders working to advance gender equality and strengthen the sustainability of Africa’s media ecosystem. It creates opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, advocacy, and collective action.
For donors based in Africa, we process payments through Paystack, which supports card payments, bank transfers, and mobile money. For international donors, we use Stripe, which accepts all major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. The platform automatically detects your location and routes you to the appropriate payment processor, but you can switch manually if you prefer.
Tax deductibility depends on your country of residence and the organisation you are supporting. Each coalition member is a registered non-profit in its country of operation. UK taxpayers donating to UK-registered organisations may be eligible for Gift Aid, which adds 25% to your donation at no extra cost to you. We recommend consulting a tax advisor for guidance specific to your situation.
If you create a donor account, you can manage all your recurring gifts from your dashboard: change the amount, switch to a different organisation, pause donations temporarily, or cancel at any time. No questions asked, no dark patterns. You can also email esther@africanwomeninmedia.com and our team will process your request within two working days.
Yes. Every donation triggers an immediate email receipt with the amount, date, recipient organisation, and frequency of your gift. Donor account holders can also download all historical receipts and request an annual giving statement at any time.
Yes. During the donation checkout process, simply uncheck the option to share your name with the organisation. Your donation will still be counted toward the public fundraising total, but your identity will not be shared with the recipient organisation.
Every organisation must satisfy four criteria to join the coalition: (1) a proven track record of at least three years of active programming with measurable outcomes for women in African media, (2) transparent financial governance with clean, independently audited accounts, (3) mission alignment with the coalition's goal of protecting and strengthening infrastructure for women in media, and (4) regional representation that ensures geographic diversity across the continent. AWiM leads the vetting process with input from an independent advisory panel.
Yes. We welcome applications from organisations serving women in African media. Visit the About the Coalition page and complete the application form. The vetting process typically takes four to six weeks, during which we review your programme portfolio, financial records, governance structure, and alignment with coalition values.
No. The coalition is a platform for fundraising, visibility, and collective advocacy; it is not a merger. Every member retains full independence over its strategy, programmes, governance, and brand. Members can leave the coalition at any time without penalty.
AWiM conceived and built the coalition platform, leads the vetting process for new members, coordinates coalition-wide impact reporting, manages the shared fundraising infrastructure, and ensures that all donations are tracked transparently. AWiM does not control other members or direct their programmes.
The solidarity fund is split equally among all six coalition members. There is zero discretion: funds are calculated and transferred automatically on a monthly basis. Every member receives the same amount, regardless of size, fundraising progress, or cause area.
Every donation designated to a specific organisation is transferred directly to that organisation within 72 hours, minus standard payment processing fees. The public impact dashboard shows real-time fundraising progress for every member, and each organisation submits quarterly financial reports that are summarised in the coalition's public transparency page.
Yes. We never store your full credit card number on our servers. All payment processing is handled by Paystack or Stripe, both of which are PCI DSS Level 1 certified, the highest standard of payment security. All data between your browser and our servers is encrypted using TLS 1.3.
We collect only the information necessary to process your donation and send you receipts. If you opt in to updates, we will send you quarterly impact newsletters. We never sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties. You can request deletion of your data at any time. Read our full privacy policy for details.
If credible evidence of fund misuse emerges, the member is immediately suspended from the coalition pending investigation. Donors who gave to that organisation are notified and offered the option to redirect their donations. The coalition's vetting process and quarterly reporting requirements are designed to prevent misuse before it happens, but we maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any breach.
The coalition is governed by a steering committee comprising one representative from each member organisation plus an independent chair. The steering committee meets quarterly to review financial reports, approve new members, and set coalition-wide policies. AWiM provides secretariat services but does not have a deciding vote on governance matters.
